FOREST ACRES, SC — A 20-year-old shot a man early Friday morning after police say the man assaulted the young man’s mother and then tried to physically assault him when he stepped in, according to the Forest Acres Police Department. Police said the 20-year-old acted in self-defense and will not face charges.

Officers were dispatched to a shooting at a home in the 5400 block of Ransom Drive shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 30. During the investigation, officers determined the man who was shot was the aggressor in a domestic violence incident involving a mother and her son.

Police say the suspect assaulted the mother during a dispute. Her son tried to intervene. The suspect then tried to physically assault him. The 20-year-old fired.

The suspect was shot in the lower body and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police identified him as Saban Burzic, 40, of Columbia. He is charged with Domestic Violence, Third Degree, and Assault and Battery, Third Degree. The charges are allegations, and Burzic is presumed innocent unless convicted.

“Domestic violence is not a private matter. It affects entire families and can escalate into dangerous and potentially life-threatening situations. We take these incidents seriously, and our officers remain committed to protecting victims and holding individuals accountable for acts of violence,” Forest Acres Police Chief Don Robinson said.

Chief Robinson’s point about escalation is the one every armed citizen should take seriously. In the sequence police describe, a dispute became an assault on a mother and then an attempted attack on her son. The threat at home is not always a stranger at the door, and your mindset has to account for that.

Police have not said how Burzic is connected to the family, whether he was armed, or how many shots were fired. They have not released the 20-year-old’s name.
