BUCKEYE, AZ — A Buckeye mother fought off a man who walked into her house and attacked her while her two young children were home on Friday, Oct. 16, and police now say the attack was planned in advance by her own fiancé and a man he met online, according to the Buckeye Police Department.
She said the attacker tried to strangle her, and court documents say he kicked her 17-month-old daughter, who fell and hit her head on a baby gate, as reported by Arizona’s Family. “He kind of shoves me into my restroom and closes the door and starts telling me to take my clothes off,” she told 12 News.
She did not comply. She fought back, trying to hit, punch, kick, and choke him. She got out of the house. Home security video captured her screaming for help as she ran outside, still fighting him, 12 News reported. A neighbor heard her screaming and chasing after him, according to Arizona’s Family. He left before officers arrived.
Police were called to the home near Southern Ave. and Miller Rd. around 6 p.m. Nothing in the police release or the court records described in coverage mentions a weapon on her side. She had her hands, her feet, and a decision made in the moment that she was not going to go along with what he wanted. Gear gets most of the attention in this space. This fight came down to mindset, and that is the one piece of equipment she had on her when a stranger came through the door.
The next day, Oct. 17, Buckeye police identified the attacker as 20-year-old Adrian Ayala and arrested him at his home in Goodyear. Police say that when he was arrested, Ayala claimed he went to the woman’s home after meeting her fiancé online and agreeing with him to sexually assault her. On the security video, Ayala can be heard saying he was there because of her fiancé, according to 12 News.
Detectives seized Ayala’s electronic devices and a phone belonging to the fiancé, 23-year-old Zarian Dyer. Police say data from those devices showed the two men communicating about the planned assault.
Investigators found Reddit messages on Ayala’s phone that police say came from Dyer’s account, Arizona’s Family reported. According to court documents, the account said he wanted someone to sexually assault his fiancée and asked Ayala, “Are you down?” It allegedly told Ayala to do it even if she fought back, and not to tell her. Investigators said other messages claimed to give Ayala “consent” because “I own her and her body,” along with instructions on where to park and how to get into the house. Court documents say Dyer told Ayala to “get here faster” because he was at a store “trynna fake kill time.” At Dyer’s first court appearance, a prosecutor alleged that he told Ayala to FaceTime him during the attack.
Most home defense planning, mine included, pictures a stranger at the door. Police say this stranger was sent by the man she was planning to marry. A defensive mindset can’t hinge on who you expect the threat to be. She didn’t know why this man was in her house. She only knew he was a threat to her and her kids, and she fought like it.

On Thursday, Oct. 29, Buckeye police contacted Dyer at his workplace near Roosevelt and Verrado Way and arrested him on charges including aggravated assault, sexual abuse, attempted sexual assault, kidnapping, and conspiracy. Police say the motive behind the plot is unknown.
The woman told 12 News she is standing by her fiancé and does not believe he was involved. After the attack, she told Arizona’s Family she did not know Ayala and didn’t believe Dyer knew him either. Police told 12 News that investigators follow the evidence, and in this case it led to Dyer. The police release does not list the charges against Ayala. Both men are presumed innocent, and the charges against them are allegations until proven in court.
