AllOutdoor Review – Benchmade SOCP Dagger

By Patrik Orcutt

The Special Operations Combatives Program (SOCP) is a realistic combatives system created for special operations forces in the military. It concentrates on close-quarters fighting skills that are useful, particularly when wearing all of your gear. Greg Thompson, who founded and developed the SOCP program, collaborated on the design of the Benchmade SOCP Dagger. Thompson, a combatives instructor with many years of experience teaching elite military personnel, made this dagger with a fixed blade specifically to be a tool for defending yourself and fighting in emergencies.

More Benchmade Reviews @AOD:

I was sent the Benchmade SOCP Dagger to review, and despite getting to train with it and evaluate it properly, that won’t affect how honestly I share my opinion. Benchmade didn’t get to preview this review before its publication.

When Benchmade reached out and asked me if I wanted to review their SOCP knife, I was kinda like, “Sure, but I’m not a bladed combat expert and I doubt I will get much use out of this product”, but said yes anyway. So the SOCP sat in a drawer for the better part of 2 months. Then last summer, I got some excellent knife training in Florida, and it completely changed how I viewed a fighting knife like the SOCP. Before that, I saw knives mostly as tools. But after practicing techniques, how to hold onto it, how to get it out, and how it’s used in the real world, I really started to appreciate dedicated defensive knives such as the SOCP. So, I was eager to test the Benchmade SOCP Dagger once I returned home.

Design and First Thoughts

SOCP

I was impressed right away when I took the SOCP out of its sheath, this is a serious knife for self-defense. The skeletonized construction makes it incredibly light at only 2.2 ounces, so you can carry it for a long time without really noticing it. The finger ring is a key for tactical implications and it firmly locks the knife into your hand during very stressful situations and enables quick, confident movements, knowing you won’t lose your fighting tool.

The double-edged blade is strong and intended for use. It’s made for pushing and piercing, which is exactly what you’d want from a knife specifically for defense. The 440C steel keeps a good edge and isn’t difficult to look after, even though I much prefer sharpening traditional blades.  I really like the overall dimensions, it’s small enough to be carried without drawing attention (in a boot, inside the waistband, or on a plate carrier) but still substantial enough to be effective when you need it. It also just looks great. Its streamlined, tactical shape and all-black finish give it a serious, professional look to match its intended purpose.

Training and How Well It Works for Self-Defense

SOCP

After my Florida training last summer, I understood much better how to actually use a knife like this. The SOCP Dagger feels like a natural part of your hand. Because of the shape and the finger ring, practicing how to hold onto it feels natural and safe. Used in a reverse grip (the main way this knife is meant to be held), it’s very good for defending yourself at close range, controlling someone’s movement, and striking.

What’s most noticeable is how well it works with big movements when you’re under pressure. In a real self-defense event, delicate movements are impossible. The SOCP is made to work with this – it’s quick to get out, stays firmly in your hand, and is effective even when your adrenaline is flowing. The sheath is also well designed, with many ways to attach it so you can carry it where you need it for fast access.

Likes

  • Excellent to hold onto because of the finger ring

  • A neat, aggressive, and really appealing look

    Final Thoughts

    SOCP

The Benchmade SOCP Dagger is one of those items that you begin to value more the more you practice with it. It isn’t a knife for general tasks or just anything – it’s a specific weapon for self-defense, designed by one of the very best in the field for the absolute worst situations. It has everything a modern fighting knife should have: it’s small, light, secure to hold, and seriously good for defense. My time with blade training in Florida showed me how valuable a tool designed for a specific purpose is, and the SOCP gives exactly what I was looking for. Whether you’re in law enforcement, the military, or a civilian who is prepared and takes self-defense seriously, you should seriously think about this dagger. I’m really impressed and intend to continue practicing with it. If you’re looking for a dedicated self-defense fixed blade, the Benchmade SOCP is definitely worth a look.
