The HORL®3 was provided by the maker, and I will be returning it once this review is done, but that does not buy me any leniency in my opinion of their wares, present or future. I have had it for a few months now and put it to work on all manner of pocket and kitchen knives, plus some outdoor implements.

HORL is a German outfit that has made a name for itself with user-friendly sharpening tech. They turned the category on its head with their rolling sharpener idea, pairing a magnetic angle guide with a rotating disc. The HORL®3 is built with solid oak and industrial diamonds, reflecting the sort of precision and durability you expect from German engineering. It is for the home cook or outdoorsman who wants to put aside a dull blade without having to master a whetstone.

The HORL®3 Rolling Knife Sharpener is just what it says on the tin. It makes getting an edge that is truly scary sharp a non-issue, particularly if you are a novice or don’t care to put in the hours learning the old ways. You put your knife on the magnetic guide (15° or 20°), roll the diamond disc back and forth, then do the same on the other side. Want to hone? Switch to the ceramic disc and you are finished. None of the soaking stones or water mess you have to put up with otherwise.

I have run everything from my pocket folders to my chef’s knife through it with consistently good results. For one who likes his gear to work without any drama. My take on the WorkSharp was that it can be off-putting to new users until they get the hang of it the HORL®3 doesn’t have that problem. A couple of passes and a dull blade is as good as new, slicing tomatoes or paper like it should.

It isn’t perfect, though. The system is restricted to 15° and 20°, so a knife with an unusual factory bevel will have to be reset over a number of sessions. Very tall blades can be a pain too since the roller won’t always make full contact without some repositioning. In those cases, you might be better off with whetstones or the WorkSharp.

Will it hold up? – HORL 3 Rolling Knife Sharpener

Without question. The German engineering and industrial diamonds speak for themselves. With the Quick Lock for easy maintenance and durable discs, this is the kind of thing you keep for life, not some throwaway gadget. Reminds me of the Yeti cooler or Flint and Tinder hoodie I’ve had occasion to review, an heirloom in all but name.

Likes
The design is simple and elegant, built of premium oak. It is hard to go wrong with the angles for reliable results and there is no learning curve for the uninitiated. Mess-free and quick, it covers most of your kitchen and outdoor knives.

Dislikes
The upfront cost is steep for a specialized tool. And while it does a fine job, it has trouble with very tall blades and is limited in the angles it will accept.

I have been using the HORL®3 in tandem with my WorkSharp for months now and it has made a permanent home in my rotation. If you have some exotic blades with odd angles it won’t replace the advanced stuff, but for day to day work it is phenomenal. Anyone can use it and get pro-level results without the aggravation.

At $170 and up you will feel the pinch when cheaper alternatives are available. But factor in the time you save and the fact that your tools will be at the ready, and it is worth it. If you were on the fence after trying the WorkSharp and want something straightforward, don’t give it another thought. The HORL®3 is my top pick for the home cook or outdoorsman who wants sharp knives and nothing else.
