AllOutdoor Review: Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel and Trika 6X Rod

By Eugene L.

Trika USA is a newer fishing gear company using premium materials like carbon fiber to make quality American-made tackle. Last year, right before ICAST, they introduced the new Trika Ti Series Spinning reels, a high-quality sealed spinning reel that uses aerospace-grade materials in its build. So, for almost a year now, I have been fishing with a 2000-size Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel on a 7 ft Trika 6X Rod for bass and inshore species. Being a lighter combo, both physically and power-wise, I used it mainly as a finesse setup, but still put the combo through its paces with some bigger water fishing. So after a year, let’s see how the Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel with 6X Rod held up.

The Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel is Actually Lighter than Listed

First Impressions – Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel and Trika 6X Rod

The first impressions of the Ti series spinning reel and 6X rod were that both were very lightweight and well-built. With the 6X rod coming with carbon fiber weave grips, it feels incredibly light. The reel is also pretty light for being made mostly of metal, with very aesthetically pleasing machine work done on the spool, rotor, and handle to lighten the reel. The build quality of the reel looked to be very good, even using nice torx head screws for securing the body sideplate. Though being lightweight is good, I did have some worries about the rod possibly being fragile.

Not a Giant but Still Not Bad for a First Fish for the Rod

Out in the Ponds – Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel and Trika 6X Rod

First stop to test out the combo was some ponds on the west side of town, testing how well it deals with finesse fishing. Throwing unweighted soft plastics during the summer to tempt sluggish summer bass. It proved to be a great combo for this, throwing these lightweight baits easily past the mats of algae and grass into the deeper water where the bass were posting up. You could feel the bites surprisingly well through the rod, even with smaller bass just ticking the worm.

Fishing the Gulf – Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel and Trika 6X Rod

I try to get down to the Gulf as often as possible to get in more fishing, so, of course, the Trika combo went with me. I mostly used it for targeting inshore species like redfish, trout, and flounder from the beach and in the bays, but I also took the combo up on the County pier to use it as an impromptu bait and squid rod. For targeting flounder in the mornings in the summer, it was a great rod, as I usually walk a few miles up and down the beach right at sunrise. I try to pack as light as possible for this, so a light combo like this fits that plan perfectly. It also worked perfectly, netting me several nice flounder over the past year.

Up on the pier, the 6X rod really showed how sensitive it was when the sun went down. Normally, when I jig for squid, I work the jigs up and down and do a big lift of the rod every once in a while to see if there is a squid. You aren’t feeling for a hit when fishing this way; instead, you are just seeing if the rig feels any heavier from a squid being attached to it. However, with the trika rod, I was able to detect the light taps of the squid as they hit my squid jigs. Which I honestly think is pretty crazy for a rod like this, these are small squid, barely more than a few ounces, but you can feel them latch onto the jigs with the rod.

On the River – Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel and Trika 6X Rod

While I used to fish lakes more than anything else, after a move, I have switched over to mostly fishing on the Coosa River. So fishing from high up on the bank or the lock is common there. Main targets here are spotted bass, white bass, and striped bass. Except for the white bass, this is definitely not a finesse fishery, often having me throw decent-size jigheads and swimbaits into heavy current to look for the bass.

Smallmouth Buffalo ate a Swimbait

And when I did hook up on a fish, unless I had my drop net prepared. I was often just winching my catch up about 15 ft up the lock wall to then flip over the rail. This had me very impressed with the rod and reel. With the rod holding up to flipping a big buffalo, which I don’t recommend any of y’all to do. As well as the reel not flexing at all when I was winching the fish up as well. But even with being able to winch these larger fish, I could also use the combo to target whitebass and crappie with smaller jigs and spoons and not have any issues detecting bites.

Final Thoughts – Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel and Trika 6X Rod

Overall, the Trika Ti Series spinning reel and Trika 6X rod do everything you would expect from a premium rod in most aspects. They are very lightweight but still plenty capable of fighting and lifting even large fish. I honestly really do enjoy just walking the beach with this combo early in the morning to pitch jigs right on the surf break for flounder. Its lightweight nature is great for long days on the water. While it can be a good general-purpose rod, I do feel it excels as a finesse rod. Even after all the salt exposure I put the combo through, I found only a little bit of corrosion on a single washer under the spool. The gasketing did its job well to keep water and sand out of the reel and protect the internals.

The Trika Ti Series Spinning Reel Opened Up to Inspect the Internals

I do want to say, I have a couple of things I want to point out as negatives. First, is that you can lightly feel the gearing mesh when you spin the reel. While it’s not egregious, it’s not glass smooth either. So, for a reel of this price, some anglers might be unhappy with that. Though there are even more expensive sealed spinning reels out there that feel even worse than the Ti Series spinners. Second is the line roller; the one on this reel does not seem to be rolling as smoothly as I would like. I’ve opened it up and found some debris in the roller assembly, but no signs of corrosion on the bearing itself. It could just be some grit that got in from fishing on the beach. Overall, these are quality American reels that have held up well to my rough use for almost a year now, and I expect the combo to keep on chugging for much longer.
