Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • What are some use cases for the Roadie® 8? The Roadie® 8 is our most personal hard cooler yet. It’s ideal for those who need a daily lunch carrier for far-out jobs, golfers, athletes, and can be strapped onto small motor vehicles such as motorcycles, ATV’s, and even paddleboards for picnics that go beyond the park.
  • How can I keep ice in my Roadie® 8 longer? To maximize your hard cooler’s ice retention, pre-chill it with a sacrificial bag of ice before loading it up, layer the base with YETI® Ice Sheets, and minimize sun exposure by keeping it in a cool, covered area.
  • Is the Roadie® 8 leakproof? No, it is not leakproof.

  • How do I clean the Roadie® 8? You can clean your cooler using soap and warm water. For a more thorough clean, use a ratio of 6:1 water to bleach and a sponge or mildly abrasive rag to scrub it down.
  • Does the Roadie® 8 come with any accessories like a basket? No, it does not. However, you can kit your Roadie® 8 out with our various accessories, such as the Small Roadie® Basket, Small and Medium YETI® Ice Sheet, or the Small and Medium YETI® Food Storage. We also offer our DoubleDuty Strap as an alternative carrying option for those who want to switch out their SmallHaul Handle.
  • Why did the handle on the Roadie® 8 switch to a hard plastic handle over the soft handle on other Roadie® Coolers? We wanted to create an ultra-comfortable, one-handed carrying solution for our most personal hard cooler yet.

  • Can I sit or stand on the Roadie® 8? It is durable enough to sit on but we do not recommend standing or stepping on it.
  • Is there a way to secure and lock the Roadie® 8? There are tie down slots on either side of the Roadie® 8’s SmallHaul Handle that can be used to strap it down to your golf cart, ATV, motorcycle, or kayak.
  • Is the latch on the Roadie® 8 the same as the latch on other Roadie® Hard Coolers? Unlike our other Roadie® Hard Coolers, the Roadie® 8’s Quicklatch consists of one larger latch instead of two, making it ideal for quick, one-handed cooler access.
  • Is the Roadie® 8 covered by Warranty? Yes, it is covered by our 5 year warranty which you can check out here.

Field Use

So, how did the YETI Roadie 8 hard cooler do out in the wild?… I brought this hard cooler with on a Lake Trout fishing trip with my father on Lake Superior. The cooler’s first endurance test was its vibration test. It spent 16 hours (roundtrip) vibrating in the back end of a truck bed. Then, 4 1/2 hours bouncing across Lake Superior (roundtrip) driving to-and-from our fishing spot. Lastly, it swayed and bounced in the bottom of our fishing boat for 9 hours while fishing. During the peak of our worst weather conditions, the cooler was riding up-and-down in 3 foot waves. Through it all, the cooler never popped open, had a latch dislodge, or anything bad happen. It remained sealed tight keeping our snacks and drinks dry from the outside weather.

It wasn’t raining during our fishing trip, but with the tumultuous waves rocking our boat, a lot of water splashed its way in from time-to-time. Throughout all of this, the cooler quickly beaded water offer and dried quickly. It was never damp for extended periods of time, or overly wet (even when freshly splashed). So, we could always get a sure grip when grasping the handle or venturing inside for some food.

The fact that this lil’ cooler survived 29 1/2 hours of shaking, rattling, bouncing, and splashing on a hearty Lake Superior fishing trip tells me everything I need to know about the cooler: it’s a winner. Small in stature, but strong heck, I loved this lil’ guy. I kept affectionately calling it my lunchbox and both the guide and my father wanted to know more about it. Overall, it was a great compliment to our extremely successful fishing trip.

Final Thoughts

So, what are my final thoughts on the YETI Roadie 8 hard cooler in the Rescue Red colorway?… Overall, I had really high expectations going into this review and this hard cooler – albeit small – perform above and beyond what I wanted. For a freshwater lake, Lake Superior is one of the biggest in the world and one of the most unforgiving. Throughout it all, the cooler held its own and we could focus on fishing and making phenomenal memories together: my father and I.

In closing, I want to say thank you to YETI for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their YETI Roadie 8. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think? Do you believe that the YETI Roadie 8 is something worth spending your money on? Would you take one with you hunting?
