In a high-stakes trial before Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge John M. Durkin, a jury returned a verdict of not guilty Friday afternoon, acquitting 23-year-old Darius Smith on a single count of murder with an attached firearm specification.Smith, who faced a potential sentence of 18 years to life in prison, admitted to firing seven shots that killed 16-year-old Ty'Ron Perry Jr.inside a Dewey Avenue residence on May 27. However, the jury determined that the prosecution failed to disprove beyond a reasonable doubt that Smith acted in lawful self-defense.
