The .400 Legend cartridge is a straight-wall design for hunters in states where hunting regulations require such things. It has a rebated rim and fits in the confines of the standard AR-15 receiver set. It fires a .40-caliber projectile in the 200ish grain weight range, using the same bolt as the 6.8 SPC and a special magazine.
Hornady’s load is part of the American Whitetail line, which is designed for deer hunting use. The projectile is an Interlock design, with a soft point for expansion and a ring inside the jacket that keeps the lead core attached to the jacket as it travels through the target. From a 16-inch test barrel, this load develops 2,200 FPS of muzzle velocity. That works out to over 2,250 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle.
