Lee-Metford Rifle: The .303 Before the Lee-Enfield

By the 1880s, the British military was actively looking to replace its standard-issue firearm, the Martini-Henry. Firearms technology was rapidly advancing and a single-shot, lever-actuated, breech-loading rifle could not keep up with repeating magazine systems and smokeless powder.

Colonel Slade issued a memorandum in August of that year, advocating for a new small-bore magazine rifle. The race was on to design a rifle that would arm the British military and it was at trials held that month that the rifle that would become the Lee-Metford began to take shape.

The creation of this British rifle was truly an international effort.

James Paris Lee was born in Scotland in 1831, but his family moved to Canada when he was five years old. He built his first pistol at the age of twelve, with a carved walnut stock, a barrel from an old horse pistol, and a priming pan made from a halfpenny. In the early 1860s, he developed a breech-loading cartridge conversion for the Springfield musket and acquired a contract for the US Army during the Civil War. Due to an error, the rifles were never deployed, but he kept working with the US Army and moved to Springfield, Massachusetts to work on a new rifle.

William Ellis Metford, on the other hand, was born in England in 1824. He was apprenticed to a railway engineer and went on to work in developing traffic patterns and as an engineer. It was during this period that he improved surveying instruments for railway engineering, and he was elected an associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1856. This was quickly followed by an appointment on the East India Railway but, when he arrived, it was to discover mutiny had just broken out. He worked to defend the town but his health deteriorated and he had to return to England.

Like Lee, Metford had been interested in shooting from childhood. His father had established a rifle club and Metford had suggested a hollow-based bullet for the Enfield rifle around 1852. Through various iterations came a change that would be revolutionary. Instead of using deep grooving and bullets of soft lead, he used very shallow grooving and a harder, cylindrical bullet which would expand into it. His first rifle of this type appeared in 1865 with five shallow grooves and a specially designed bullet.

Finally, in 1870, he began to work seriously to create a breech-loading rifle and it didn’t take him long to create a winner. Sir Henry St. John Halford took the principal prize for military breech-loading rifles at Wimbledon in 1871 using one of Metford’s rifles and would become his friend and assistant in experimenting with design from then on. Metford’s rifles became extraordinarily successful in competition. From 1877 until 1894, they won the top prize all but four years while winning multiple other prizes.

The British Small Arms Committee realized that there could be something remarkable in pairing James Paris Lee’s rear bolt system and detachable magazine with a revolutionary seven-groove rifled barrel designed by William Ellis Metford.

Contemporary firearms like the Mauser put locking lugs at the front of the bolt, but Lee changed everything by placing them at the rear, prioritizing rapid fire and reliability over strength. With this system, which cocked upon closing rather than opening, a user would push the bolt forward and close it rather than lifting the handle to cock the firing pin, making the motion much faster, utilizing natural hand placement. It allowed British soldiers to fire fifteen to thirty shots per minute, a speed so unheard of that it came to be called the “Mad Minute.” The seven-groove Metford rifling used very shallow grooves rather than the deep grooves found on earlier rifles. This reduced the amount of black-powder fouling that could accumulate in the barrel while maintaining excellent accuracy. And the shallow rifling minimized bullet deformation and drag, resulting in long-range precision.

In December of 1888, the design was formally adopted as the Magazine Rifle Mark I (later redesignated the Magazine Lee-Metford Rifle Mk I), and manufacturing began. Over its lifetime, an estimated 350,000 were produced at the Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF) in Enfield and Sparkbrook (Birmingham) as well as commercially at the Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) and London Small Arms (LSA) factories. It saw action in The Battle of Omdurman in present-day Sudan and the Second Boer War (South Africa).

The Lee-Metford rifle was not in service for long. It had been designed around black-powder ammunition, but that became a liability as the British military transitioned to Cordite smokeless powder in the mid-1890s. It was replaced by the much more famous Lee-Enfield. However, when the First World War erupted, some were brought back into service as the British Army faced shortages of newer rifles.

The Lee-Metford is overshadowed in history, but it was exactly the rifle needed for its moment in time.
