POTD: Kleft Cane Gun – London’s Ultimate Gentleman’s Multi-Tool

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a W.H. Kleft telescope and flintlock cane gun manufactured in the early 19th century. In 1814, Kleft was granted British patent 3837 for a walking staff containing pistol, powder, ball, screw telescope, pen, ink, paper, pencil, knife, and drawing utensils.

During the early 1800s, canes were at peak popularity among upper society, and many unique attempts were made adding utility to walking sticks. Kleft’s patent represented the ultimate gentleman’s multi-tool concept, though few examples containing all components were actually made.

This example contains a flintlock pistol, screw telescope, and oil bottle. The small folding trigger screw-barrel flintlock pistol is contained within the top grip area. Light floral and martial engraving decorates the pistol marked “W.H. KLEFT/INVENTOR” and “LONDON”.

The cane comprises five threaded sections: upper section containing the pistol, an empty section below, the telescope, another empty section, and bottom section containing oil bottle and two lead weights with gilt brass tip. The shaft sections have spiraling ribs around the entire length finished in black enamel with simple gilt brass cap on top.

Limited examples of Kleft canes exist with various component combinations. The defensive pistol function was probably more novelty than practical – a .36 caliber single-shot with folding trigger wasn’t ideal for self-defense. The telescope likely saw more actual use for viewing distant subjects during walks. These canes represented status and ingenuity during the Regency and early Victorian periods when gentlemen’s accessories reached peak elaboration.
