POTD: Ross Model 1912 Cadet – Canada’s Straight-Pull .22 Trainer
Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a Ross Model 1912 Cadet straight-pull bolt action rifle in .22 caliber, manufactured 1912-1917. The Ross Rifle Company of Quebec produced these as training rifles based on their controversial military rifle design.
Sir Charles Ross designed the straight-pull bolt action used in Canadian military rifles from 1903-1916. The straight-pull mechanism allowed faster cycling than traditional turn-bolt actions – the shooter pulled the bolt straight back and pushed forward without rotating. This theoretically provided higher rates of fire.
The military Ross rifles in .303 British proved disastrous in WWI trench warfare. Mud and dirt caused jamming, and the bolt could be reassembled incorrectly, causing it to blow back into the shooter’s face. Canadian troops abandoned Ross rifles for Lee-Enfields whenever possible. By 1916, Canada officially withdrew the Ross from frontline service.
However, the .22 caliber Cadet model didn’t face the same issues. The smaller cartridge and cleaner training environments meant the straight-pull action worked reliably. These were used for cadet training programs teaching marksmanship fundamentals before conscripts handled service rifles.
The 21 1/2-inch barrel provided adequate accuracy for training purposes. The straight-pull action gave cadets experience with the Ross system used in military rifles, though by 1917 this was becoming less relevant as Canada switched to Lee-Enfields. Ross Rifle Company went bankrupt after losing military contracts. The Cadet rifles represent the one area where Ross’s straight-pull design actually worked as intended – in .22 caliber training applications rather than combat conditions.
