POTD: The Cabot Grand Duke Prototype – Toolmakers Built This

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a 1911 built by people who were not in the gun business at all. Cabot Guns came out of Penn United Technologies in Cabot, Pennsylvania, a carbide tooling shop that grew out of a three bay garage and now turns out precision parts for aerospace and medical work. At some point management asked the floor what they wanted to build. The answer was a 1911. I love that story.

It also explains the pistol. The original 1911 was drawn with tolerances loose enough that a slide and frame could stack up ten thousandths of slop and still pass inspection. That was the right call in 1911. Machining was manual, and the gun had to keep running caked in trench mud. Cabot went the other direction about as hard as anyone has, grinding rather than cutting and holding parts to a thousandth or better, tight enough that they claim their parts drop in with no hand fitting at all. Whether you want a 1911 built that tight is its own argument, and I would rather have a little slop in something I carry.

The Grand Duke was a 2022 Gun of the Month Club variation. Two prototypes got made and both went through the NRA-ILA auction that year. Stainless throughout, with the sight rib machined into the slide instead of bolted on top of it. If I had Grand Duke money I am not sure a 1911 is where I would put it, but the machining is hard to argue with.
