SIG516 G3 Goes Short With New 11.5-Inch Pistol and SBR

SIG Sauer is expanding its modernized SIG516 G3 line with two compact 11.5-inch models: a braced pistol and a short-barreled rifle. Both retain the short-stroke piston system that originally separated the SIG516 from the crowded field of direct-impingement AR-15s.

The announcement follows the release of the 16-inch SIG516 G3. Although AmmoLand has previously put an earlier SIG516 through extensive use, we have not tested the G3. This is a new generation of the platform, not merely the old rifle wearing a different handguard.

In SIG’s announcement video, the company representative describes the 11.5-inch models as compact alternatives for shooters concerned about overall length, particularly when working in and around vehicles. He also presents the firearm with SIG’s HEXIUM 5.56 suppressor, reinforcing the obvious appeal of an adjustable piston gun with a short barrel.

A Modernized SIG516

Both new models are chambered in 5.56 NATO and use an 11.5-inch cold hammer-forged barrel with a 1:7 twist. The barrel has a 1/2×28 tapered shoulder and comes fitted with SIG’s flash hider-compensator.

The G3’s updates include fully ambidextrous controls, steel reinforcement in high-wear areas and user-replaceable wear components. SIG also equipped the rifle with a free-floating M-LOK handguard and its Matchlite Duo curved trigger.

One of the G3’s most distinctive features is its dual charging arrangement. Shooters get the familiar rear charging handle along with a non-reciprocating side charger. The two handles operate independently, allowing the shooter to run the gun conventionally or manipulate the action from the side without the handle moving during firing.

At the center of the design is an adjustable short-stroke piston system. The SIG516 G3 operator’s manual shows four settings: Normal, Adverse, Suppressed, and Zero Gas.

Normal is the standard setting for everyday unsuppressed shooting. Adverse increases gas and back pressure to keep the rifle cycling when fouling, mud or other harsh conditions threaten reliable operation. Suppressed is optimized for firing with a sound suppressor. Zero Gas completely closes the gas system, preventing the action from cycling and effectively turning the SIG516 G3 into a manually operated, single-shot firearm. SIG needs to correct the conflicting three-position language on its product pages.

Rifle, Pistol, or SBR

The 16-inch SIG516 G3 rifle established the next generation of the 516 product line. It uses a six-position Magpul DT stock and weighs a listed 7.7 pounds. The rifle measures 36.5 inches overall and 33 inches with the stock collapsed. Its 16-inch barrel makes it the conventional, non-NFA option for buyers who want the G3’s piston system and upgraded controls in a full-length carbine.

The new SIG516 G3 pistol comes with a Magpul BSL arm brace. SIG lists it at seven pounds with a magazine, 30.3 inches overall and 28.3 inches with the brace collapsed.

The SIG516 G3 SBR uses a six-position Magpul DT stock. It weighs a listed 7.3 pounds with a magazine and measures 31.8 inches overall or 28.5 inches collapsed. Because its barrel is shorter than 16 inches and it wears a shoulder stock, the SBR remains subject to the National Firearms Act. The pistol provides a factory alternative for gun owners who do not want the SBR registration burden.

All three configurations ship with one 30-round polymer AR-15 magazine.

SIG516 Proven Track Record

AmmoLand’s experience with the earlier SIG516 gives us good reason to pay attention to the G3. In our SIG516 Gen 2 upper review, we found a piston-driven carbine that consumed cheap ammunition and continued running despite hard use and infrequent cleaning.

That same older-generation SIG516 later passed 5,000 rounds, most of them fired suppressed. Those results cannot be assigned automatically to a redesigned rifle AmmoLand has not tested, but they demonstrate why the return and continued development of the SIG516 matter.

SIG has taken a respected piston-driven AR design, modernized its controls and furniture, and now offered it in the 11.5-inch format many serious shooters prefer. The next step is getting one on an AmmoLand range and determining whether the G3 lives up to the reputation established by the SIG516s that came before it.
