MIAMI, FL — A man police believe may have been an intruder was shot and killed at a home east of Interstate 95 early Monday morning, and one person was taken to the station for questioning while detectives work to get a search warrant for the house, according to the Miami Police Department.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 4600 block of Northwest 5th Avenue just after 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, as reported by CBS Miami. Miami Fire-Rescue crews found a man, believed to be in his 40s, with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“What we know thus far, and this is very preliminary, is that a person believed to be an intruder may have been the person who was shot,” Miami Police spokeswoman Officer Kenia Fallat said. “We also have one person at the station that we are speaking to.”
Video from the scene showed two people taken into custody for questioning. Police later said in an updated release that one person was being questioned in connection with the shooting. Fallat said it is not yet clear whether the resident is a homeowner or a tenant, and police were seeking a search warrant to enter the home.
That is the part of this story I want to focus on, because the details are thin and that one fact is not. One man is dead. Police do not know the sequence. The person they most want to hear from is sitting in a room at the station, and the home itself is sealed until a judge signs a warrant.
“Detectives are on the scene combing through the evidence that they obtained and possibly trying to gather video from neighboring homes,” Fallat said. “There is a lot that we don’t know. We are speaking to a person at the station, and we are hoping that he is going to tell us what happened.”
If you ever fire a gun inside your own home, expect exactly this. Expect to be handcuffed. Expect your firearm taken into evidence. Expect to be separated from your family and driven to a station while detectives canvass your street for doorbell video. Expect a warrant for your house, and expect hours before anyone tells you anything. None of it means police think you did something wrong. It means a man is dead and they have to build the record from the ground up, and the only account that matters at that point is the one the evidence supports.

Being detained is not the same as being arrested, and being arrested is not the same as being charged. The mindset piece is understanding that before it happens, so the handcuffs do not feel like a verdict. Police have not said who fired, have not identified the dead man or the person being questioned, and no charging decision has been announced.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Miami Police. “That information, no matter how little it is, may be instrumental to help detectives with the investigation,” Fallat said.
