At CANCON West 2026, Russell Phagan set up a miniature FAST stage at the Boulder Rifle & Pistol Club in Boulder City, Nevada, so attendees could get a taste of what his Firearms Action Shooting Trials matches throw at competitors. I stopped by the stage to talk with Russell about what he packed into the scaled-down version and what shooters can expect at a full match.
FAST matches are held at ranges around the country as time-based 2-Gun (rifle/pistol) and rifle-only events. Stages use natural terrain and include physical challenges, with rifle targets out to 500 yards and pistol targets out to 100. The 2026 season included stops in Arizona, West Virginia, and Idaho, where FAST debuted its Auto-Rifle division for registered machine guns and FRT-equipped rifles.
Russell has competed in 3-Gun since 2002 and helped create InRangeTV’s Brutality match series before launching FAST this year. He is also VP at KE Arms and posts match footage and gear reviews on his @SinistralRifleman YouTube channel.
