Texas Homeowner Shoots and Kills Hallucinating Blood-Covered Intruder Who Broke In at Random and Cornered Him in His Bedroom With Wife and Children Home
A homeowner in Lytle, Texas, fatally shot an intruder who broke into his home at random on October 4, 2026, while his wife and children were present. The intruder, 36-year-old Patrick Lee Roy Edwards, was hallucinating and covered in blood after an earlier violent disturbance at a nearby home, where a 13-year-old girl suffered knife wounds.
Edwards had no connection to the second home and cornered the homeowner in his bedroom. Police stated the shooting was justified given the immediate threat, and the homeowner is not expected to face charges, though the investigation remains ongoing with assistance from the Texas Rangers.

LYTLE, TX — A Lytle homeowner shot and killed a hallucinating man who broke into his house at random Sunday night, covered in blood, and cornered him in his bedroom while his wife and children were home, according to Lytle police.
The chain of events started just after 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, at a home on Butch Cassidy Street in the Saddle Ridge Estates subdivision, as reported by News 4 San Antonio. Lytle Chief of Police and Fire Marshal Richey Priest said 36-year-old Patrick Lee Roy Edwards was hallucinating and aggressive during a disturbance at the home where he lived with a woman and her children.
A 13-year-old girl, the woman’s daughter and not related to Edwards, suffered knife wounds at that first home. Another child escaped the house and called for help. A neighbor also called 911.
Edwards then ran to a nearby house. He was covered in blood. He broke in at random. He cornered the homeowner in his bedroom with the man’s wife and children inside. The homeowner fired. Edwards died at the scene.
Police say Edwards had no connection to the second home. That detail is what makes this encounter so dangerous from the homeowner’s side of it. There was no argument to end, no demand to satisfy, no reason a stranger covered in someone else’s blood was standing in his bedroom. A hallucinating man does not respond to the things that sometimes de-escalate a sober one.
“It unfolded quickly, but any reasonable person would definitely realize that their life is in danger,” Priest said. He added that with the homeowner, his wife, and his children all in the house, he did not know of any option the man could have used that would not have potentially ended in a worse tragedy than the night already was.
Lytle is a small town about 25 miles southwest of San Antonio, and 911 had already been called twice over the first scene before Edwards ever reached the second house. Help was on the way, and it still came down to a man in his bedroom with his family behind him and seconds to act. That is the mindset piece of this story. The call you make, or your neighbor makes, does not stop the threat that is already through your door.

The 13-year-old was taken to University Hospital and released the following day. The Texas Rangers are assisting Lytle police with the investigation at both locations.
Police say the homeowner is not expected to face charges. No formal charging decision has been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
