The CROSS Sawtooth SBR Folds to Under Two Feet

SIG Sauer has added an SBR to the CROSS Sawtooth line, chambered in .308 Winchester with a 12.5-inch (317.5 mm) PROOF Research carbon fibre barrel. It weighs just over 6 lb (2,770 g), and with the stock folded, it comes down to 23.5 in (597 mm). A bolt gun that packs to under two feet is a genuinely different proposition from one that does not, whether you are getting it into a pack, a truck, a helicopter or a confined shooting position.

SIG pitches it for dense terrain, confined spaces and backcountry work, and the folding precision-adjustable stock extends out to 32.5 in (825.5 mm) when you need a proper length of pull.

I have a soft spot for rifles built around a user-changeable barrel, and the CROSS platform seems to do that well. The PROOF Research carbon fibre barrel has 5/8x24 muzzle threads, so the suppressor question is answered, and the barrel comes off without a gunsmith if you want a different length or chambering later.

In my mind, this feature is more important on a short-barreled rifle than it is on a conventional one, because the short barrel is a deliberate trade rather than a permanent commitment. It would be nice to have a spare, longer barrel for other needs.

A .308 Winchester losing seven and a half inches of barrel against a 20-inch gives up meaningful velocity, and SIG publishes no figures for what that costs. What you get back is handling, portability and a rifle that works well behind a can. For short- to medium-range hunting and for anyone whose shooting happens in tight places, that is a reasonable bargain. For long-range precision work, it is not the tool, regardless of the sub-MOA accuracy claim.

The rest of the specification is standard CROSS Sawtooth. The SIG Adjustable Match Trigger is two-stage, the grip is an AR-compatible reduced-angle design, and the handguard carries M-LOK slots with an ARCA rail underneath and a 20 MOA Picatinny rail on top. The magazine holds five rounds, and the finish is Moss Green Cerakote throughout. This is a new Cerakote to me, but it looks really good with black contrast.

Does a 12.5-inch .308 make sense to you, or is this a cartridge that needs a longer barrel?
