The Free Low-Light Challenge That Tests If You’re Really Ready for the Dark

By Jacob Paulsen
If you had to defend yourself tonight — not on a lit range, but in a dark parking lot, a black hallway, your own backyard at 2 a.m. — do you actually know whether you and your gear would be up to it? Most of us don't know. We carry every single day and we've never once put it to the test because taking a quality low light class is expensive and inconvenient. We assume the flashlight works. We assume we'd make the right call. We assume we'd see what we needed to see, when we needed to see it. Those are a lot of assumptions to stake your life on. Especially when you consider that a large share of real defensive encounters happen in exactly those conditions — in the dark, or close to it — and almost nobody trains for it. So we built something to fix that. It's free, it starts today, and by the end of it you'll know exactly where you stand.

Introducing the Low-Light Readiness Challenge

The Low-Light Readiness Challenge is four short challenges, spread over the next several days. Each one answers a question you've probably never actually asked yourself:
  • Do I even have the right equipment?
  • Would I make good decisions under pressure?
  • Do I actually understand how light works in a fight?
  • Can my gear really do what I think it can?
None of them take long. None of them require a range, a class, or spending a dime. Some of them you can do from your couch; one of them you'll do in your own driveway after dark. And a few of them are going to surprise you — because the whole point isn't to make you feel good about your setup. It's to show you the gaps you didn't know you had. You can't fix a gap you don't know exists. This challenge is about finding them.

How It Works

Everything lives on one page: the challenge page. Each challenge unlocks on its day. Whichever one is current will be open and waiting for you. If you miss one, no problem — they stay on the page, so you can click back and catch up anytime. Nothing disappears. Complete all four and you'll earn the Low-Light Readiness badge — and $5 in store credit along with it. Challenge 1 is live right now. It takes about ten minutes, and it starts with the flashlight you're carrying today.

Where It All Leads

The challenge builds to a live webinar: The Truth About Low Light, with Dan Brady — a career law enforcement officer and one of the most respected low-light instructors in the country. On the live session, Dan walks through everything the challenge reveals. How the whole group scored. The decisions people got wrong. What your gear can and can't actually do — and, most importantly, how to fix every gap the week exposes. It's the debrief the entire challenge is building toward. It's Thursday, August 13, at 8:00 PM Eastern / 6:00 PM Mountain, and it's free. Hundreds of people are already registered. If you're doing the challenge, you'll want to be there for the payoff. Register for the live session here. If you won't be able to attend, register anyway so you will receive the replay.
