The Truth About Alligator Gar, Ryan’s Dinosaur Fish
For much of the last century, the alligator gar carried a reputation that got it killed on sight. Anglers across its range treated the armor-plated, toothy giant as a nuisance that ate bass, crappie, and every other fish worth catching. That view has flipped. The species now has a cult following among catch-and-release anglers and bowfishermen chasing an eight-foot, 300-pound freshwater dinosaur, and the science that fueled the shift shows the old assumptions were mostly wrong.
The short answer to whether alligator gar are a premier gamefish or a giant trash fish: they check every box a trophy species should. They eat a wide range of baits and lures, they fight hard, and they get enormous. What held the species back was reputation, not biology. Below is what fisheries research has actually learned, and what that means if you want to target them.
Why alligator gar were nearly wiped out
The negative perceptions did real damage. Decades of the belief that gar were competitors for desirable sportfish led to overharvesting throughout much of the species’ native range, and at points during the last century some state agencies ran deliberate eradication efforts. Alongside the harvest pressure, dam-building and flood control blocked the migration routes gar used in the Mississippi and suppressed their ability to spawn.
The combined effect shrank the range dramatically. Alligator gar once ranged up into the middle Mississippi as far north as Ohio; today they hold on mostly in the lower Mississippi and Gulf Coast drainages. Texas remains home to the healthiest populations in the country, but even there a complete absence of harvest regulations produced what one account called a gar-killing free-for-all. That lasted until 2009, when the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department set a statewide bag limit of one fish per day.
What the research changed
The science is young. “Before the last 12 years or so, there was very little known about alligator gar,” says Dan Daugherty, a fisheries research biologist at TPWD’s Heart of the Hills Fisheries Science Center. “They weren’t exactly considered a ‘prize fish’ until recently, so we’ve had a lot of catching up to do in the last decade.” TPWD began studying the species around the same time it wrote the first regulations, prompted in part by watching gar populations crash in neighboring Louisiana and Mississippi.
Because these fish live 50 to 100 years, biologists describe the work as still gathering baseline data. Even so, several findings have reshaped how the species is understood. Researchers learned that gar grow quickly but only spawn when seasonal floods push water into the floodplains, which explains why channelizing rivers and controlling floods hit the species so hard. They also refined aging techniques, reading a fish’s otolith and validating those estimates with more advanced lab methods. The oldest fish researchers have caught in Texas was 63 years old, Daugherty says, while an eight-and-a-half-foot gar from Mississippi produced an otolith that put its age near 95.
One finding matters for management above the rest. “Virtually all the big fish in these populations are females,” Daugherty says. “The males don’t live as long or get nearly as big. And even though everyone wants that big 7- or 8-foot alligator gar, we’ve learned how important these bigger, older female fish are.” Removing the largest fish removes the most productive breeders in a species that already spawns inconsistently.
Do alligator gar actually eat your bass?
The single most durable misconception is that gar decimate crappie and bass. The research does not support it. Alligator gar are opportunistic feeders that eat primarily what is most available, and in most systems that means carp, suckers, and buffalo. A largemouth or other sportfish shows up in a stomach occasionally, but never as a primary diet component. As Daugherty puts it, “No study has ever suggested that.”
The strongest real-world evidence sits in the lakes bass anglers already love. Toledo Bend Reservoir, Choke Canyon Reservoir, Falcon Reservoir, and Lake Amistad are among the best bass fisheries in Texas and regular stops on the Bassmaster tour, and every one of them has held large alligator gar populations since it was formed. “Alligator gar can’t be bad for largemouth,” Daugherty says. “Most diehard bass anglers still have a distaste for them, but they’ve had great bass fishing on these lakes for years, and there’s been alligator gar there the whole time.” Falcon Reservoir is the sharpest example: in 2012 Bassmaster Magazine rated it the number-one bass lake in the country, and it also carries one of the most abundant gar populations in the state.
Where the regulations differ
Texas built its management around the one-fish-per-day statewide bag limit, later adding a mandatory harvest reporting program in 2019. There are exceptions to the harvest rules. Falcon Reservoir, which sits on the border and is co-managed with Mexico, is the only water body in the state where the one-fish limit does not apply. There, anglers may keep up to five gar per day with no slot or length limits.
If you plan to fish for gar, check the current rules for the specific water you intend to fish. The Trinity River and Lake Livingston carry their own restrictions, and the special harvest reporting requirements apply in ways that vary by location.
How to actually catch one
Legal methods include bowfishing, rod-and-reel, and passive gear such as juglines, limblines, and trotlines. Bowfishing is a lethal harvest method: once a fish is shot, it cannot be released. If you intend catch-and-release, that decision rules out the bow and shapes everything else you do.
Rod-and-reel fishing for gar involves a steep learning curve, and even seasoned guides deal with a high rate of dropped baits, hang-ups, and failed hooksets. The most common Texas setup is cut common carp on a treble or J-hook, fastened with strong braided line to a steel leader, fished on the bottom or suspended under a large slip-float. The float helps because it shows the direction a fish is facing before you set the hook; more leverage is available when the gar is oriented away from you.
The hook itself is the challenge. An alligator gar’s upper jaw and mouth are cartilaginous and bony, packed with teeth, and unusually resistant to hook penetration. Some anglers let the fish swallow the bait before setting, then cut the leader and release the fish with the hook still in place. Others aim to mouth-hook the fish with a powerful hookset just after it takes the bait. Setting before the fish ingests the bait yields roughly a 50 percent success rate, and that rate may hold regardless of where the fish ends up hooked.
Handling for survival
The conservation science points to a few concrete practices. Use non-stainless-steel leaders and hooks 3/0 or smaller, with bronze aberdeen hooks recommended. Larger hooks are more likely to damage internal organs, and stainless hooks and leaders can persist in tissue for years while bronze degrades relatively quickly.
Land the fish on shore rather than lifting it over a boat gunnel, where lassos or snares can cause internal injury to a heavy fish. Keep the fish in or near the water, support its full weight for photos, and minimize handling time. If a fish is hooked beyond the mouth cavity, do not dig the hook out. Cut the line or leader and leave the hook to degrade and shed.
Successfully mouth-hooking a gar gives the best chance at survival, because you can hold the jaw open with a stick, use thick gloves and needle-nose pliers, and release the fish clean. Treat every big female as breeding stock worth returning to the water, and the trophy fishery stays a trophy fishery.
