TOLEDO, OH — A Toledo woman armed with a shotgun held two brothers at bay inside a home on Pinewood in the early morning hours of Tuesday, October 6, after a fight with her family. Officers arrived to find her still holding them. Both men left in handcuffs.
Police responded to the home and found the woman holding the shotgun, defending her family from the men, as reported by WTVG. Units forced entry and placed the brothers under arrest.
Police identified them as Dazeon Hersey, 19, and Juawan Hersey, 21. Juawan was living at the home with his girlfriend at the time, and the fight was with her family. Dazeon faces charges of domestic violence, assault, obstruction, and resisting arrest. Juawan is charged with domestic violence, assault, and using weapons while intoxicated.
That last charge matters. Police say a man who was drunk and armed was fighting with the family he was living with. Whatever the weapon was, the woman who picked up the shotgun was not facing two empty-handed men. She was facing two attackers, at least one of whom had a weapon and had been drinking, inside her own home.
Two on one is a disparity of numbers that armed citizens are trained to take seriously. Add intoxication and a weapon and the picture gets worse. She did not have to find out how far it would go. The shotgun came out, the fight stopped, and the men were still there when officers forced their way in.

This is what many defensive gun uses look like. The firearm appears, the attack ends, and nobody pulls the trigger. These cases rarely make headlines because there is no body and no dramatic video, but they are the outcome every armed citizen should be training for.
The mindset lesson is the same one I keep coming back to. The goal is never to shoot someone. The goal is to stop the threat, and the best possible outcome is the one where the threat stops before you have to. She held the line and let police do the arresting.
